Week 5 of NYC Marathon training & a 5k race!
This was my second week being coached by Allie Kieffer and training was not getting easier! The toughest parts for me are Tuesday's speed workouts and Thursday's midweek long run. I love the long run and of course the easy runs! This week's training:
Tuesday's speed workout was tough! We still have high humidity here in VA and no sign of fall in sight, the weather was sunny with 100% humidity and the dew point at 72. I tried my best but after the 2nd 2 min interval, I had to walk all recoveries.
1 mile WU 9:46
4x3min (7:36, 7:47, 7:48, 7:47 min/mile pace)
4x2min (7:37, 8:24, 7:51,7:53 min/mile pace)
4x1min (7:29, 7:35, 7:25, 7:27 min/mile pace)
1 mile CD 9:17
-> total 6.5 miles
Wednesday was an easy 4 miler at the YMCA and then a PIYO class. I can't believe how sore I was after my first class and now I feel great! Class is still not easy though!
Thursday I was planning on running my 8 mile run with Dagmar and woke up with the worst stomach cramping EVER. I think it might have been a food intolerance to oats, a new food I cooked the night before. I spent 3 hours in the bathroom and Mike even had to drop Zoe off at preschool. By lunch I felt better, still not able to eat much, but I was able to run on the treadmill. Proud of myself for getting that one done.
Saturday was my long run with a twist! I ran 8.5 miles before a 5k! I ran around the race start and it was a little scary to run by myself and find new routes, but at the end it worked out fine! I also tried my new hydration belt and I'm not sure if it will work out or not. The belt itself is nice, but it loosens up after a while and slips down. So I have to tighten it up all the time. This time I only ran with 2 bottles, I wonder how it will be with 4 bottles. Next long run we'll see!
After those miles my belly was in a knot, at the start of the 5k I felt I had to puke! But once the gun went off, I felt good! First mile I ran comfortable hard and then just tried to hold the pace for the rest of the race. I finished in 24:44, my fastest time in 6 years and only 20 seconds off of my PR. I was very happy with my time. I did secretly hope for a PR, just because I feel I'm in my best shape ever right now. But I did run an almost 40 mile week, plus I ran almost 9 miles right before the race.
I even placed 3rd in my AG! That barely happens anymore! And at this race AG winners got a medal and a gift card! So that was super exciting!!
After the race I still needed 4.5 more miles to finish my 16 mile run. My calves were sore and achy and I was so ready to be done! Overall I ran the 16 miles with a 9:04 avg pace. The first 8.5 in 9:19 and the last 4.5 with a 9:46, that was shocking since I felt like I was walking the whole time! I'm really happy how strong and fast I feel right now! Also, my recovery is going well. My legs are tired, but not sore or in pain. I do feel my calves and hip, but just soreness. Keeping my fingers cross it stays that way.
... 42 days until the NYC marathon !! ***6 more weeks!!!***
