Getting My Hip Checked Out

Since April (right after the Monument 10k race) I started to have a tight right hip. I took it easy for a few weeks and increased strength training and it got better. Then we traveled and I found more and more excuses not to do anything in terms of strength and my hip is bothering me on and off. It's not bad enough to stop running, actually running oftentimes makes it feel better. Even long runs (10 and 12 milers) didn't make it worse. But rest does! So sitting for a long period of time and then getting up is really painful. Once I get going, it usually feels ok though.

With the marathon being 10 weeks away, I wanted to make sure this won't turn into more and I decided to see a doctor. I saw Dr Cho at Total Rehab (the owner). He has a very impressive resume and I heard from a few people, that they liked him. Long story short, I was impressed!! He was patient and friendly and confirmed what I thought: a tight TFL. But he also found a tight piriformis. He thinks the piriformis tightened up due to the tight tfl. But it could be vice versa, time will tell.

He did his ART (active release therapy) and it hurt so good! I felt a lot better right away, but he said if I'm not pain-free to come again later in the week. Unfortunately, I'm not, so I will see him again on THU. I really hope we get this sorted out soon.

Since Zoe was born there was always somewhere some nagging pain in my body. First the bad knee, which led to know running for 18 months. And then tight right hamstrings and now the tfl. My right side always seems to be off. I can only imagine what my body could do if I were pain-free!! Maybe one day! :)

68 days until the NYC marathon!
