First Long Run
Now that I'm officially training for the NYC Marathon I need to step up my game and increase my mileage. I only have 10 weeks left!
Last weeks race was a great start and today I wanted to push it to 12 miles. I'm so thankful that 2 of my friends are training for the Richmond marathon, which is a week after NYC. Perfect to run our long runs together.
My alarm went off at 5am and I meet with my friends at 6:30am. It was still dark outside! That's when you know you train for a marathon :) The weather was fantastic, especially for August! We started with chilly 61F and finished in low 70s and sunny. Perfect!
I'm still trying to figure out my fueling. For the half marathon distance fueling wasn't a big deal, mostly I ran on water and maybe some pretzls and Bloks. But for the marathon I need to pay more attention, especially since I have such a sensitive stomach. Several people told me over the last few moths about Tailwind. I never know how much to use though. Today, I used a super concentrated mandarin flavored mix in my hand held (2 scoops for 9oz) and water in my hydration vest. The concentrated mix was a little too much in terms of flavor, later on at home I diluted it by 50% and it tasted much better.
I didn't eat anything before or during the run, only sipped concentrate and water every mile. I felt fine the whole run! We actually kept up a super fast pace for this hilly course (9:05 pace overall with last one being the fastest at 8:35).
My hip was doing ok as well. I could feel the nagging pain as always, but it didn't get worse while I was running. Afterwards I immediately foam rolled in the parking lot. The rest of the day I spent with friends and we walked a lot. I'm tired from getting up early, but the walking after a long run always helps my legs to feel so much better! My hip is not worse than before the run. I was in a lot more pain last weekend after the 10 miler, so that's good news!
Overall, I'm super please with today's long run. It was actually the longest distance I ran since November 2017!
...71 days until the NYC marathon!
