First Long Run - Devil Den 10 Miler Race Report

This morning I woke up at 5am to run a 10 mile race organized by my running club. I'm not the biggest fan of a 10 miler in August, but knowing I need to ramp up my miles now (Thanks to NYC Marathon) I was motivated to get up and going.

For the first time in years I took my hydration vest with me, just to be on the safe side.  Fueling is always a little tricky for me and usually less is more. So, this morning I drank water and had a handful of pretzls. Before the race I took 1 Block and then water and pretzls during the race. I have to say fueling was great and no stomach issues.

Earlier this year I made the goal to run all my races this year with a sub 9 min pace. (I didn't know I will run a marathon). My half is in the fall, so I knew I could do any distance up to a half marathon with a sub 9. My only "worry race" was today's since it is August and therefore super hot and humid here in VA. Not my favorite weather at all! For some reason, today we had the best weather we ever had in August! At the start it was in the high 60s with a "low" humidity. It felt really good compared to the last few weeks!

Today's goal was to enjoy my first long run in this marathon cycle and try to stay sub 9 as long as I can. Long story short, I felt good and was able to run a steady race. Finished in 1:30:11 and according to my Garmin (race was a little longer) a 8:59 pace! And a PR by almost 30 seconds!! Woohoo!!

Official race results:

I finished the Devil's Den 10 Mile on August 19, 2018 with a chip time of 01:30:11. My pace per mile was  9:01. I placed 73 of 112 runners, 32 of 49 Female runners and 13 of 17 in the Women's 30-39 division. I scored 938 Grand Prix points in this race. Weather on Race day was 67 degrees, 66 degree dew point, sunny.

Super happy with my result today!! My only concern is my right hip. Since April I feel a nagging pain, not bad, but it kind of is always there, sometimes more, sometimes less. Most of the time the pain is less while running but then increases after. I got a massage this week, which felt great, but didn't "cure" it. I think it's due to weak hips and glutes and I really need to be more consistent with strength training, especially now that I increase the mileage. Hope that doesn't turn into a problem.

This week I'm looking forward to geting more details about my upcoming marathon and training! I'm so excited!!

...77 days until NYC marathon!
